This week's topic is hospitals, arguably representing where most of the spending on health care in the US goes. When one considers inpatient and outpatient services, hospitals take in more than 60% of total US health care spending. This has remained true despite major shifts over the past few decades away from hospital inpatient services. We will examine for-profit and non-profit hospitals; individual hospitals and larger multi-hospital health systems; specialty and general hospitals.
