Those soldiers who did posses that discipline knew that \"If I flinched I was ruined\" The problem was many of the volunteer soldiers were not disciplined. This irritated many officers. It would be so intolerable on the battle eld that threats of deadly force would have to be implemented to get soldiers to fire and to reduce retreating. General Sherman's threat to fire artillery on his own men was one of the extreme cases. Court martial was another means of coercing soldiers to act. These usually resulted in some type of public humiliation. The idea of leadership was presented in this chapter as a motivation for some troops to fight. Confident and strong officers led to increased discipline among troops. They grew to not just to follow their officers, but to also respect them. Confederate officers strongly believed in the ideal of lead through example. They understood that they could not ask their men to do anything they themselves were not willing to do. Statements of officers who refused to give in to adversity in hopes of inspiring their troops depicted that desire to lead by example. Regardless of what examples these men were led by there was a \"deeper source\" that truly motivated them when they were caught in between the volley of bullets and artillery
