"Those students figure if they can talk, they can deliver a speech without any practice." This statement emphasizes the importance of thinking before speaking just like my momma used to say. It reminds me of a time in High School I took a business class back when my major was Marketing. We were given a random topic and had to sell the item or as those know, give a 1 minute pitch. Many would think 1 minute? How easy. Well, the kid who talked the most during class time and was known as the class clown, had no idea how to deliever the message when given the topic. He ended the speech with sixty seconds left and forty seconds filled with gibberish and mispronounciation. I was surprised, but considering we were given the topic that day I cut him a little slack. Last semester I was given a topic on pollution I practiced my nonverbals (which at the time I did not know that was the proper word) because I used to use the words "like" and "umm" an awful lot. I also knew hand gestures were used in speeches so I practiced picking an arm up once every minute. Considering this project was 5 minutes and half of my grade I practiced in the mirros as many times as I could. I broke down the topics and filler topics to make sure I was not left bank. This helped me stay on track as well and not get off topic. To conclude, I believe nonverbals can impacts ones speech in many ways even to those who think they are great speakers.
