1a) Businesses provide jobs, spur innovation and improve a nation's infrastructure, but they can also cause harm. As the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill showed, business activities can have disastrous effects on a society. One of the most tragic such industrial disasters occurred in Bhopal, India, in 1984. More than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide plant, immediately killing at least 3800 people and causing significant morbidity and premature death for many thousands more.

• Why do you think Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) might have chosen to produce agricultural pesticides in India rather than export those products to India from plants in developed countries?
