This exercise will familiarize you with how to design and calculate swales for drainage around flat areas such as building pads. Design a horseshoe swale (two swales from a single high point) around the building pad shown on the following diagram. Show all graphic work on plan. Show additional calculations on extra sheets of 8 x 11 paper (not trace). Only clear and legible work will be graded Assume the following conditions: a) Longitudinal slope of left swale is minimum of 3%; longitudinal slope of left swale is minimum of 2%. b) Maximum slope is 4:1. c) Slope away from building pad is minimum of 2% for first 5 feet. d) SHP (the cross to the upper left of building pad) is a minimum slope of 2% measured diagonally. e) Scale is 1"=20' (The drawing should be to scale, but if not, rescale it before doing work.) Instructions: 1. Spot Elevations correctly noted at all given spots (0.5 points each, total 7 points) 2. Curb cuts (BOC/TOC) noted correctly to both ends of the curb cut (0.2 points) 3. Swale noted with correct line type and arrows (0.2 points) 4. Swale centerline located correctly, at even gradient, and within slope limitations (2%- 10%) (0.4 points) 5. Drain structures are noted correctly (label and rim elevation) (0.2 points) 6. Desired trees preserved (no grading within the drip lines) (0.2 points) 7. All contour lines are accurate (4 points) 8. All contour lines are labeled accurately (tick marks, index and elevations provided) (0.5 points) 9. Grading within site boundaries (0.2 points) 10. Lettering well organized and legible (0.2 points) 11. Correct north arrow and scale included (0.2 points) 12. Appropriate line types used for existing and proposed contours (0.2 points) 13. Title Block, titles/subtitles appropriate and well-drawn (0.2 points) 14. Professional presentation (good layout, clean-neat-blemish free) (0.2 points) 115 110 115 SHP 109 114 Level Area GARAGE 115 CONCRETE DRIVEWAY 2% 115 RESIDENCE FFE=115 N 108 110-
