Throughout Rubin's text, she makes the point about how society enforces what is considered normal or not normal in regard to sexuality (1984). Typically behaviors viewed as "abnormal" are punished or criminalized in some way to maintain society's version of normalcy or "ideal" (Rubin, 1984). It is crucial to understand how Rubin's hierarchical system of sex pertains to the U.S. administration's aspiration to marginalize the LGBTQ+ community because; it reflects how those at the top of the pyramid, the "normal", are rewarded greatly in various ways, such as respectability or legality. Meanwhile, those at the bottom of the erotic pyramid, the "abnormal", are "...subjected to [the] presumption of [a] mental illness, disreputability, criminality....[and more]" (Rubin, 1984, p. 151). As I mentioned previously, those who are viewed as abnormal, or in this case those at the bottom of the erotic pyramid, are punished for their interests or behaviors that go against society's standards. Refusing to understand this erotic pyramid and how the government is trying to marginalize the LGBTQ+ community, allows the U.S. government to freely and openly oppress innocent people for being themselves.
