Time Challenges in Treatment Delivery A new patient is scheduled to start treatment on Jim's treatment machine on Monday. Everyone has warned him that the new patient is very angry and very difficult to schedule for procedures. Jim meets Mrs. Jones on Monday morning, greets her warmly, and does all that he can to put her at ease during the long process of starting her treatments. When the time comes for him to discuss her appointments, Mrs. Jones insists that she needs different appointment times daily. Jim carefully explains that they cannot accommodate quite that many changes in the schedule for the 7 weeks that she will be in treatment. Jim and Mrs. Jones reach an agreement that seems to satisfy them both. For the next several weeks, Mrs. Jones arrives at a different time every day. Sometimes she calls to reschedule; sometimes she just appears at the department with no notice. Jim and the other therapist he works with try very hard to accommodate their patient, but it begins to cause havoc with the rest of their schedule and inconvenience most of their other patients. Jim approaches Mrs. Jones with the question of whether another appointment time would be better for her. Mrs. Jones quickly becomes verbally abusive, screaming that she wishes she had gone elsewhere for treatment. She shouts that she doesn't want to talk about this anymore and she is tired of being chastised every time she is 5 minutes late. Because this is the first time Jim or his partner has mentioned her tardiness, they are surprised at her reaction. Discuss how they should handle the situation. Consider whether they will be able to discuss this with Mrs. Jones or should refer her to a supervisor, because she is so convinced that she has been harassed about her appointments since the beginning. What kind of legal or ethical issues does this case history contain?
