Time Management

The first Practical Assignment is to assess your Time Management Skills. This consists of (1) charting your time usage and (2) analyzing your time usage. When you analyze your time usage, be sure to be self-critical.You need to think beyond just accomplishing everything you have intended to do for the day.How else can you improve? In business, "constant improvement" is the key to success.

Hint: To receive full points, be very analytical as you evaluate your own time usage.Again, just "accomplishing everything you set out for the day" isn't enough. In business, we need to ALWAYS FIND WAYS TO IMPROVE.

Instructions:

There aretwo parts to this assignment:Chart creation and Self-Analysis.Make sure you submit both sections to receive maximum credit. The textbook is NOT required for this assignment, so do not wait for the textbook's arrival to complete the assignment.

Part 1:

Pick a typical day to analyze your time usage.Make sure this day is a representation of your typical day.Making a list of everything you do from the time you get up to the time you go to bed, and how long it takes you to do it in 30-minute increments.Make your record specific. List all of the significant results accomplished during each quarter-hour.

After making your last entry for the day on your time analysis chart, categorize each time usage event. Be sure to note if the category is planningactivities that need to be done that day -

  • (P) = Planning and organizing your schedule to appoint the time you will do such activities. You may most likely do this at night in preparation for the next day, first thing in the morning for the day,or even at the beginning of the week for the entire week's schedule.
  • (D) = Directing (even delegating) the task to someone else since great managers delegate well. You may be delegating to your employees or even to your family members.
  • (C) =Controlling yourschedule by making adjustments and improvements based on incidents that happened earlier that day. For example, in the morning you had more phone calls from customers than you normally do.You made adjustments for the first event in the afternoon to cater to the change in the situation.
  • (O) =For categoriesotherthan planning, organizing, directing, or controlling, ask yourself "Does this taskreallyrequire my talents and experience, or could someone else do it or be taught to do it?"

Now, chart your day.You can use Excel to create a table, excel to create a pie chart, word doc to insert a table. If you don't know how to do any of these, you may want to take this opportunity to learn it through YouTubesince this skill comes in handy in business.

Part 2:

Now comes the more important part of the assignment:Answer these two questions thoroughly. Label your answers with the question number.

Q1 How satisfied are you with your time usage? Be self-critical toidentify opportunities for improvement.Make sure you display in-depth thinking. Minimum 200 words.

Q2.What are yourspecific game planson how you will do things differently? Remember, everyone has room for improvement.A good mindset in business is to "constantly improve and evolve."

With a minimum of 200 words, provide your specific and measurable game plan.Agood game plan has to be measurable in terms of -

a.What specific action willyou change(e.g. not general"social media usage"; but instead, "3 hours of social media that I engage in daily."

b.What specific action will you implement to make that change (e.g. "I will set my alarm on my phone before I open my social media app")

c.How much of it you will change (e.g. "reduce it to 1 hour a day")

d.When will you start the change (e.g. "start today")

e.By when will you see the result of the improvement (e.g. "I will see the result in 30 days")

f.How will you measure if you achieved this game plan (e.g. "I will not waiver on this 1 hour a day discipline" or "I will keep a daily record")

The example above is on social media usage, but you may select any action that is relevant to you.
