Title: Floating ShipObjective: You will verify Archimedes' Principle and determine requirement for an object tofloat in water.Apparatus: spring scale, block of wood, clay, graduated cylinder, string, iron cube, aluminumcube, mass box, cup. Background Theory: A chunk of iron cube sinks in water. However, a ship made of iron floatsin water. Both iron cube and ship are made of same material. What makes the different resultsbetween the two objects? Archimedes' principle answers the question. It states the magnitude ofbuoyant force acting on an object, which is partially or completely submerged in fluid, is equal tothe weight of the fluid displaced by the object. If magnitude of buoyant force acting on an objectis equal to the magnitude of weight, then the object stays floating. The object sinks whenmagnitude of buoyant force acting on an object is less that magnitude of weight.Experimental Method: 1. Measure mass of an aluminum cube, weight of aluminum cube insideof water and out of water. Buoyant force is the difference between the weight of cube inside andoutside of water. Calculate the buoyant force acting on the cube of aluminum.2. Immerse the aluminum cube inside of graduated cylinder with water and measure volume ofwater displaced by noting the initial and final water level. Calculate weight of water displaced bythe aluminum cube. Note: 1ml water is equal to 1g of water. W=mg where g: 9.80m/s23. Measure mass of a wooden block with a balance and place in water inside of a cup
