To become a more effective speaker I believe the best strategies are using clarity in your speech, avoiding words that may have different meanings to the audience, avoiding curse words, and using proper jargon if needed. Using curse word, slang, and even abstract language can take away from your speech and confuse your audience. If you are writing a speech for a nursing convention, of course you would want to use the proper jargon that would add to the credibility of your knowledge to the audience of medical professionals. If you are writing a speech that will be delivered to a mixed audience, that has no particular demographic, you would want to use language that is considerably meaningful to the majority of people. For example, if I am a politician is explaining why a bill should be passed to an audience of potential voters, I will use language that is widely known and speak on a ninth or tenth grade level so that everyone understands. You may change your strategy depending on your audience but, the most effective strategy would be to practice what you have written before giving your speech and making sure that it has the appropriate meaning for the audience.
