Today's terrorist is more religious-based than previous terrorists. That said, all terrorists have developed ideologies and motivations that attempt to create a personal religious-like experience in their followers. It is difficult to get someone to kill for a cause without making it personal, and the current form of terrorism is effective in personifying the ideology.

It is not very difficult to see how terrorism has evolved from a cry for change to social evolution to religious beliefs. All of these stages demonstrate how the right message can evoke feelings of frustration and anger. In the Dark Ages, Christian leaders could rally fighters against anyone that was an infidel, and the environment was rich in ensuring those fighters had clear motivation to fight. Modern terrorists are not unique in developing propaganda to support their cause, and they have multiple examples to choose from when developing effective strategies for recruitment.
