Tom Brown is a legal assistant in a busy litigation firm. As Tom is walking in the door at 8:30 a.m., he passes Mike Walker, his supervising attorney, who is on his way to court to begin a trial. As they pass, Mike says to Tom, "I need a motion and a brief for the Jones case. I've left the file on your desk." Mike walks out the door and down the street to court. Tom becomes very anxious because he knows very little about the case and the law involved. Can Tom competently prepare the motion and brief? Why or why not? What should Tom do?
