Tony is a 22-year-old Eritrean man who has recently become a convention refugee. He is currently living in Toronto at a youth shelter, where residents are not permitted to be on site between 9am and 5pm on weekdays. As a result, Tony started spending his days at a nearby park where other residents would also hang out during the day. One day recently, the police came to the park and arrested Tony, saying that he was being charged with several counts of assault for being involved in a mugging the day before. After spending a night in jail, Tony comes to your office and shares that he was nowhere near the incident when it happened and feels that he was racially profiled by the police. Tony is now facing serious criminal charges, which could have serious impacts on his immigration status. Being new to Canada, Tony has no idea what steps he needs to take. 1) What are some important considerations you need to make while thinking this area through the intersectional lens (please note that some of these considerations may and should overlap)? 2) What options are available to this person/family? What are the limits to the options available? What gaps exist in available services? 3) What are some concrete steps you would take as a settlement worker to meet this person/family's needs? 4) What other organizations/programs exist (at least TWO) where you might refer this case? What might be some limits to doing this?
