Topic 1 - MathTalk Video: Average vs. Instantaneous Velocity
When you are traveling by car you often have an idea of how long it will take to get to your destination. The time it takes to travel a set distance is directly related to how fast you can travel along the route. Vary rarely, however, is the speed at which you are traveling constant. You speed up or slow down, or even stop, along the route. How fast are you going? If you are reading the speedometer in the car, it provides the speed at that moment (the green line). The average (the red dashed line), is determined by the distance traveled divided by the time it takes to travel a set distance. |
This discussion has two topics and requires four posts.
Respond to Topic 1, after watching the MathTalk Video: Average vs. Instantaneous Velocity
Respond to Topic 2, after watching the MathTalk Video: Marginal Analysis and Approximation
Be sure to monitor the posts and reply to a classmate. Remember, responses to a classmates' post should add substantive meaning to the discussion (be thoughtful, thought provoking, insightful).
There were several different business examples given in the video regarding maximizing revenue, minimizing cost, and maximizing profit.
Give a detailed description of at least one real-world example where determining the instantaneous rate of change would be helpful. (This does not have to be a business example, and it should not be the same as the ones provided in the video.) Is this related to a hobby of yours or part of your work experience? Who would this benefit?
After making your post, reply to a classmate's post to earn maximum points. Remember, these replies should add substantive meaning.
