Topic 2: Gender Opinions on the character of Hermione Granger are divided: some see her as a feminist icon, while others note that for all her power, she is too often reduced to the nagging mother archetype. Meanwhile, Emma Watson, the actor who plays Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, has long been recognized as an outspoken feminist. In 2014, Watson gave a speech to introduce a gender equality campaign at the United Nations headquarters. In her speech, she noted: [T]he more I have spoken about feminism the more I have realized that fighting for women's rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating. If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes." (Watson, 2014) In a series of tweets in 2020, Watson also spoke out in support of transgender rights, making it clear that gender equality should support all genders on the spectrum. The feminist effort to achieve gender equality often means dismantling the political, economic, and social systems and structures that privilege men: collectively, these systems and structures are known as the patriarchy. Analyze three characters from any ONE of the Harry Potter novels or films: in what ways do these characters challenge and/or reinforce gender norms? In what ways do they work to dismantle or uphold the patriarchy? Remember that literature and film reflect, but often also critique, their contemporary moment. In what ways are these representations of gender reflections of our current society? In what ways do they challenge the status quo and strive for inclusivity?
