Topic B: Protecting and Supporting Foster Youth Country: India Committee: Novice United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund I.Topic Background According to UNICEF, children in the foster care system fall into the branch of alternative care. Alternative care is a wide range of practices that focus on creating health through a balance between mind, body, spirit, and environment. Today, there are 2.7 million children around the world that are in foster care. According to a scientific study, a child's early years are when having a stable home is most important for their development. Lack of such a home can result in a series of issues that put foster youth in danger, including poor personal and emotional development. Being in foster care can take a toll on the kids, and can cause social exclusion, low education, and behavioral problems. After reaching the age of 18, 20% of the children who were in foster care will become instantly homeless. Every child deserves an equitable chance for a good life no matter who they are as a person, despite whether or not they are a part of foster care. The number of kids in foster care is high because of child abuse, neglect, and voluntary choices. When people think of foster care, abuse is likely the first thing that comes to mind. A child who has experienced physical or sexual abuse has to be taken out of that circumstance right away. While additional adjustments are made in the family, the child is protected in foster care. Children who are a victim of this violence experience isolation, loneliness, and dread. They don't know how to get help, especially if the offender is someone close to them. The likelihood of violence can be influenced by a child's gender, disability, poverty, nationality, or religious
