Amazon-Economic Amazon-Economic: Due to the Covid-19 virus a lot of people were forced out of work due to businesses closing. People's ability to shop in stores shut down for periods of time and it became difficult to acquire he things they needed with shutdowns and fear of the unknown virus. However, through these difficult times, Amazon was able to hire over 427,000 employees according to Karen Weise from the NY Times. (Weise, 2020) Amazon's stock price alone rose over 60% during the pandemic period because people were ordering online through Amazon faster shipping and delivery. Amazon used online advertisements to attract workers and offered them higher than the average minimum wage salary to begin working for them. Amazon helped to combat the rise of unemployment because they took on a huge hiring wave with both permanent and temporary workers to support the growth within the company from the pandemic. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/1 1/27/technology/pushed-by-pandemic-amazon-goes-on-a- hiring-spree-without-equal.html?ref=oembed Target Corporation- Demographic As the demographic segment is concerned with the aging population, greater disparities in income levels, and the geographic distribution of the population, I found an article that explores these factors within Target Corporation. A couple in their 80s were a part of a COVID-19 layoff at Target, and it affected them greatly. After the financial crisis of 2008, they lost around $240,000 which cost them their retirement savings (lacurci, 2021). Since they were forced to work and are in the population of 2 million unemployed over the age of 55 as of January in comparison to 35% of young adults, it was clear that they were at disadvantage and could be facing the life of an out-of-work, long-term unemployed senior. Interestingly enough, their hourly wages were raised from $13 to $15 an hour when they were furloughed in March, but then they completely lost their jobs the following month. The couple is from Richmond, Virginia and their location could attribute to the loss of job in comparison to younger workers, but it is interesting to look at the demographic factors that played a role in this couples' situation. If you think any other demographic factors played a role in this situation, feel free to share your thoughts below! https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/06/how-covid-led-to-unemployment-for-older-americans.html
