Tourism has enabled the economic growth of Shangri-La, yet this has required the commercialization of Tibetan culture. Consider the following quote from Ben Hillman, a professor at the Eastern Tibetan Training Institute: "Economic development can rekindle interest in cultural heritage, which is inevitable reinterpreted...I don't think we can judge that without reverting to some kind of elitism, where wealth and fortunate people who can travel to remote parts of this planet want to keep things locked in a cultural zoo."
