Tracey and Peter were married for fourteen years and had two daughters, Debra (12), and Diana (8). The marriage was turbulent with many arguments often accompanied by incidents of physical confrontations between the parents in front of the children. The parents were unable to agree on virtually anything involving the children. Although Peter was close to the older child, he had a poor relationship with the younger child, Diana, who was the "spitting image" of her mother. Diana was terrified of her father and often retreated to her room whenever he was home. Debra was a real daddy's girl who loved spending time with him. Tracey had no interest in sports but Peter would go to all Debra's games and often practiced with her playing tennis, basketball, and soccer. Debra would always take her father's side in any disagreement. Without any encouragement from her father, Debra was totally alienated from her mother and was critical of her often referring to her as stupid, uneducated, and a lousy mother. Debra and Diana tolerate each other but are not close at all. Tracey and Peter finally decided to get a divorce and engaged in a bitter custody battle with each parent fighting for custody of both children. Given these facts, what custodial arrangement do you think the court should order and why? Include visitation plans, if appropriate.
