Trademark Registration Activity:

  • Find a trademark registered in the United States. You will know it is registered if you see the symbol and can locate the trademark registration in the USPTO trademark database (see below). These are just about everywhere these day - look at products in your residence or conduct an internet search for brands that you know, and chances are the trademark will be registered.
  • Locate the trademark registration information by going to the USPTO trademark database (https://www.uspto.gov/trademarks-application-process/search-trademark-database(Links to an external site.)) and then selecting "Search our Trademark Database", then "Basic Word Mark Search" option. Enter the trademark in the box and click "Submit Query"; don't change any of the search settings. Note: there may be more than one registration and/or there may also be some pending applications for the same mark; if so, just pick one of the registrations. Make sure the option you select has a "Reg. Number" and click on this number to view the registration information.
  • Identify the following items and enter your answers in the Discussion thread:
    • What is the registered mark?
    • What is the Registration Number?
    • What are the goods and services covered by the registration?
    • Who is the owner?
    • What is the maintenance status? Has a 8 declaration been accepted? Has a 9 renewal been granted? Has a 15 declaration of incontestability been acknowledged? What is the latest date 8 or 8 & 9 can be filed?
      • Note: To get the maintenance information, click on the blue "TSDR" box on the left side of the screen, then click the "Maintenance" tab. If there is no information on accepted, granted or acknowledged, these items haven't occurred yet.
