Question 1 (10 points): Read the following two cases separately and identify the scheduling problem in each case using the notation that you have learned in the class. Provide a very short explanation about each parameter , and in your answer. Your answer for each case will be like: You are NOT required to mathematically formulate the problem. Case 1 ( 5 points)- In production factory A, there are 4 production machines. For a specific day, there 18 jobs to be processed by the available machines. Each job must be processed on machines 1, 2, 3, and 4 consecutively with the mentioned order. For each job on each machine, a specific fixture must be installed on the machine to hold the job. The installation time for each fixture is different and known in advance. If two jobs to be processed consecutively on the same machine, require the same fixture, then for the second job we do not need to change the fixture and use the same fixture without wasting anytime for the installation of the fixture. Some of the jobs are available at the beginning of the day. However, some other jobs are not available, but we know when they will be available in the factory. The production manager wants to schedule the jobs on machines such that the weighted tardiness in minimized. Case 2 (5 points)- In a production factory, everyday, around 125 assembled electronic items are transferred to the quality control department for the final test. This case study is about scheduling of quality control for these items in the quality department. The assembled items arrive gradually during the day to the quality department and their arrival times are different but known in advance. In the quality department, we have 10 workers to check the quality of transferred electronic items. Each one of these electronic items must be inspected by only one of the workers. Each worker cannot inspect two or more items simultaneously. The inspection times depend on the item and the worker inspecting it. We have a matrix of inspection time with 10 rows (the number of workers) and 125 columns (the number of items) as the data. When the inspection starts, it cannot be interrupted. There is not any due date for inspection of the items, but since these items are very expensive, the company prefers to have them inspected in order to sell them as soon as possible. (hint: several objective functions could be appropriate, choose only one of them)
