This strategy grew out of the Broken Windows Theory that we have been learning about throughout the course. This policy is commonly referred to in the media as "Stop & Frisk" After implementing this policy in the 1990's, the City of New York experienced a dramatic decrease in their violent crime rate and they now have one of the lowest crime rates of any major city in the United States. You read about the underlying legal justification for "Stop & Frisk" in Terry V Ohio. This policy though is not without critics as you will see once you start researching Stop & Frisk for this discussion. Several problems and concerns have arisen since its implementation. This topic again highlights the issue of law enforcement having to balance the rights of the individual to be free versus the rights of society as a whole to be safe. In the discussion take a position for or against "Stop & Frisk" and justify your reasoning. Find and review a news article, published book, or academic journal article about the policing strategy of "Stop & Frisk that supports your position. Please cite the source you reviewed. Students who oppose Stop & Frisk should argue for one of the other crime prevention strategies listed in the textbook and why that policy is the better alternative. Students should then reply to another student who took the opposite position of themselves and point out at least one valid point that the opposing student made in their argument. It is important that students are respectful and considerate of other students who may have a different viewpoint. The goal of the discussion board is to foster a debate about a complex issue in modern policing and encourage critical thinking about the issue.
