Open theTornadoesdata. Make sure that the screen is split and that the labeling for months is correct. The data file should look like this:

Next, in the cell below entire January data, write =Sum(C5:C49) and press Enter. This will add all the January data and the results should be 595.

Next click on the lower right corner of the cell until cursor becomes

Then left click and drag the cursor until you reach Dec column. This will produce a cell in each column containing the sum of tornadoes for each month.

Starting with the newly created raw data (i.e. the sum of number of tornadoes for each month) the goal is to create the chart below:

I. Highlight the newly created row and choose theline plotwith connected "dots."Dots represent months and they are connected in order to emphasize the tornado season.

II. How do you put months into the X-axis? To do this, first Right click on the chart area and a window will prompt (not shown); next click on the Select data tab and a new window will prompt. You should click on Edit tab (there are two Edit tabs, you are to click on Horizontal Axis; circled).

Yet another window will prompt and you should click on the circled area and highlight the labeled months row.

******(Those instructions above are the tutorials)******

Use theTornadoesdata and the procedure described in the tutorial on Tornadoes to create a chart whereX-axisare theMonths (Jan, Feb,...)and theY-axiscontains themedian number of tornadoes deathper month. Hint: to compute average type =Median(P5:P49).

Answer questions 13 and 14.

13. Which two months have the highest median number of tornado deaths?

  • a. April and May
  • b. May and June
  • c. July and August

14. Which month has the third highest median tornado death and what is the median (round to one decimal place)?

  • a. March and 2
  • b. June and 3
  • c. August and 5

Use theTornadoesdata and the procedure described in the tutorial on tornadoes to create an additional row data containing the standard deviation of tornado death per each month. Hint: to compute standard deviation type =StDev(P5:P49).

Answer questions 15 and 16.

15. Which month has the second highest standard deviation of tornado death?

  • a. June
  • b. July
  • c. August

16. Which month has the second lowest standard deviation of tornado death?

  • a. August
  • b. October
  • c. September

Create the third row data, containing the range of number of tornado deaths for each month. Hint: Type =Max(P5:P49) - Min(P5:P49)and then (as before) drag the cursor.

Answer questions 17 to 20.

17. Which month has the highest range?

  • a. March
  • b. April
  • c. May

18. Which months have range below 20?

  • a. July and September
  • b. November and December
  • c. March and April

19. Which month has the highest sum of tornadoes deaths(need to create another row!!)?

  • a. February
  • b. March
  • c. April

20. Which two months have the lowest sum of tornado deaths?

  • a. January and March
  • b. July and September
  • c. April and May
