Children at this age are entering a cognitive phase known as the

preconceptual stage. These children can mentally sort some objects and actions. There are some verbal preconcepts formed, however, the meaning of words may fluctuate from one time to another.

Preconceptual children are constructing and organizing knowledge about a wide range of areas in their world. They are beginning to classify objects and to develop very limited ideas of quantity, number, space and time. Children enter into symbolic play at this age and also begin to be representative in their drawings. For example, a child may point to a squiggle that they have drawn on a piece of paper and say, "That's my house". At this time, children become active

explorers, seeking information through manipulating and observing their world.

Language

Children of this age are rapidly increasing their vocabulary.

Development

Building on their use of language to name objects with single words, they proceed to a more complex structuring of language, the sentence. Children construct sentences; they do not reproduce sentences from memory. Therefore, the child has to think and select words which express the child's ideas in ways others can understand. Children use many sentences which contain specific word patterns. They hear others use word patterns and then use these same word patterns over and over in their process of constructing language. Books contain language patterns which serve as examples to children who are busily constructing language; therefore, you should read to children often. Children also can read books with pictures. These experiences provide practice in putting thoughts into oral language. Favourite books will be chosen to be read again and again by toddlers.

Written language is becoming more a part of the child's world. They see print at home, along the highway, and in other homes. They look at the print as well as the pictures in books now being read to them.They enjoy seeing their own names on each of their own papers. Toddlers at this age are eager to make their own marks. A variety of writing opportunities can be provided to them in many different ways.
