Two methods of teaching foreign language vocabulary were compared in an experiment. To evaluate the instruction, a 50-item vocabulary test was administered to the 16 students who had been assigned at random to the two treatment groups; eight students were in each group. The score on the vocabulary test was the number of correct items.
