Two types of sources that can be used to do research are 1)Scholarly or 2) Popular sources. These are terms used to define an article's format, the type of research and writer, its purpose, audience, review criteria and language. Scholarly sources are usually journals published by a professional association and presents original research done by an expert in the field. These types of journals contain citations throughout the paper, which is typically reviewed by peers before publication. The language of a scholarly source is technical, and the audience is experts or students in the field. In contrast, a popular source is normally in the form of a popular book or magazine, it is commercial in nature and written by journalists, bloggers or writers familiar with the subject matter. References and citations are not usually included, and they have not been reviewed by peers before publication. The language of this type of material is basic and it is normally written for a general audience to provide information and entertainment.Examples of popularsourcesarenews websites (NY Times, Washington Post), Wikipedia, investopedia.com, about.com, smallbusiness.chron.com, huffingtonpost.com, ehow.com, forbes.com, cnn.com, online encyclopedias, or similar non-academic websites for assignments and discussions. Articles in these types of websites are written by reporters who may or may not be experts in the field, and consequently may have incorrect or biased information.
It adds much more credibility to use the class readings, other related textbooks, and peer-reviewed articles, i.e. scholars have analyzed and evaluated the content for accuracy, quality, and reliability. Be sure to use the university library to help you find these types of scholarly references. The library has a setting in database searches that allow you to search for peer-reviewed articles only.
