Two weeks ago, Sione, a basketball player at a local high school, suffered cardiac arrest during practice. Fortunately, an athletic trainer, Tamah, was present and responded quickly, implemented the steps in the emergency action plan, applied the AED, and saved Sione's life. The athlete and his family were extremely grateful, and Tamah was honored at the local city council meeting. She was humbled by all of the media attention she received for simply doing her job.

Unfortunately, in their state, many high schools do not employ athletic trainers. For those who do, the athletic trainer is often on a part-time contract and not available for all practices and games. Had Sione been attending one of those other high schools, he might not have survived the incident.
