- Two years ago, I finally took the plunge. I had always wanted to learn to fly. Little did I know that in the time it took to learn a lot about flying, I would learn a lot more about myself as well.
I had heard rumours that the older you are, the harder it is to learn. Although I was almost clocking 40 years, I had lots of fun learning how to do the pre-flight checks, take-offs, climbing, descending and even the mock emergency simulations. But actually, there is scientific evidence that for some types of motor skills, learning new things helps keep older people's mind sharper. There are even cases of people in their 70's and 80's successfully taking flying lessons. So, if you feel the need to learn to fly, go for it.
If you like the challenge of self-improvement, then learning to fly is right down your runway. The idea of being able to control several thousand pounds of metal and place it anywhere you desire on a runway is one heck of an accomplishment.
Before each flying lesson, you will need to deal with lots of people, from the airport security, to the flying school instructor, and air traffic control. For an introvert like me, it can be overwhelming. By interacting with these people professionally and cordially, you can learn a lot and build your confidence. When you go up into the sky, you will encounter many decision points. The confidence you gain to navigate through those decisions when learning to fly helps you to be more confident in life. So, go ahead, be confident but never lose caution.
Flying taught me to pay attention to the details. It makes you realize and appreciate how important the small things really are. I have taken this lesson to other things. For the first time in my life, I find myself very careful about checking my car before reversing out of the parking spot. That is as it should be.
Many people fly for pure enjoyment, taking local flights on nice days to soar above familiar locations and new and interesting places. You can take a friend and fly for lunch across the country instead of across town. Learning to fly will unlock a world of possibilities and give you unparalleled freedom to see the world. It is a truly unique experience. Flying is one of the last great adventures in our modern life. It is challenging, rewarding and flat out fun!
