TWO-WAY AN OVA In this assignment you will use the general linear model (GLM) in SPSS to examine the association of socioeconomic status of parents (adoptive and biological) with intelligence of their children. In particular, you will explore the interaction between adoptive and biological parent category. You will also test the model assumptions and apply diagnostic tools in SPSS. Heredity, Environment, and Intelligence When it was first published in 1994, Richard Hennstein and Charles Murray's bestesellling book The Bail Curve set off a restorm of controversy about the relationship among genetics, intelligence, and environment. According to the book measured intelligence (IQ) is largely genetically inherited and IQ is correlated positively with a variety of measures of socioeconomic success in society. Among others, the book referred to a study conducted in France in 1989. The study is described in your textbook on page 407', Exercise 19. For your convenience, we will give a brief summary of the study below. The researchers selected samples of adopted children whose biological parents and adoptive parents came om either the very highest or the very lowest socioeconomic status (SES) categories (based on years of education and occupation). Random samples were selected from the four following combinations of adoptive and biological SES: (1) high adoptive SES and high biological SES, (2) high adoptive SES and low biological SES, (3) low adoptive SES and high biological SES, and (4) low SES for both parents. The researchers attempted to obtain samples of size 10 from each combination, however, only eight children belonged to combination three. The 38 selected children were given intelligence quotient (IQ) tests. The data are available in the SPSS le labisav located on the STAT 252 Laboratories web site at http://www.stat.ualberta.ca/statslabs/indexhtm (click Star 252 link, and Assignments 1-5). In order to download the data for the lab, click on the link Data for lab 5 and follow the instructions. The data are not to be printed in your submission. The following is a description of the variables in the data file: Variable Name Description of Variable IQ Intelligence quotient, ADOPTIVE Socioeconomic status of adoptive parents (High or Low), BIOLOGIC Socioeconomic status of biological parents (High or Low). Use the data to answer the following questions: 1. First you will describe the study in the twoway AN OVA setting and examine the study design. (a) What was the purpose of the study? What are the subjects used in the study? What is the response variable? What are the two factors considered in the study? What are the levels of each factor? (b) Comment on the study design. What kind of inferences can be drawn from the data given the design? Can the study be used to prove that observed differences in IQ scores are caused by socioeconomic status of their biological and adoptive parents? Can any inferences be drawn to the populations?
