Under common law, breach of peace was the term used to describe any unlawful activity that unreasonably disturbed the peace and tranquility of the community. Breach of peace, as used today, is "a flexible term, occasionally defined by statute, for a violation of public order; [or] an act calculated to disturb the public peace."640 Breach of peace can also be described as "a public offense done by violence, or one causing or likely to cause an immediate disturbance of public order."641 The term itself "embraces a great variety of conduct destroying or menacing public order and tranquility. It includes not only violent acts, but acts and words likely to produce violence in others."642
