Unfortunately, fret board diagrams are often confusing. The leftmost string on the diagram above is the $6$ th string and the rightmost string is the $1$st string. When playing a guitar the top string is the $6$th string and the bottom string is the $1$st string. But on the fret board below, the top string is the $1$ st string and the bottom string is the $6$th string.
