Unit 1 Discussion and Article Submission
Find an article that makes an argument about some issue related to this module's topic. (Your article can be about any kind of business-related practice or action.)
Post the title of the article as a link (if it's embedded in a larger work - such as a chapter of a book, please link to the larger work and cite the page numbers of the chapter).
Give a description of the moral problem in the your submission. (What action/practice/behavior is the article concerned about the morality of?). Note that the author likely won't say, specifically "This is a moral problem, and the problem is ..." Part of the work associated with this assignment is to identify which things involve morality and moral problems, so we'll have to use our judgment, here. But, luckily, lots of different types of discussions count as involving morality -- if someone is making the argument that _____ "should" or "ought to" do some particular thing, avoid some particular thing, etc., then it likely has to do with morality or a potential moral problem.
Give at least 2 possible solutions that attempt to solve or prevent the moral problem.
State which of the solutions you think is best and why.
Note: You must submit an article before you can view your classmates' posts.
Example:
apple-wont-help-fbi-unlock-a-terrorists-iphoneLinks to an external site.
This article is concerned with the morality of a mobile-phone manufacturer allowing law enforcement access to the private information stored on someone's mobile device.
The article's position is that denying such access is morally right/justified.
The article argues that if photographers lose public trust by manipulating photos, the whole institution of photojournalism will be undermined.
Possible Solutions
The manufacturer could allow access to the information only when compelled by a warrant.
The manufacturer could refuse to allow access to the information in any case by designing the mobile device to be "uncrackable" even by the manufacturer itself.
The manufacturer could grant access whenever requested
The first of these two solutions is the best, since it requires less effort overall in order to pursue. It is difficult to design mobile devices to be "uncrackable" in this way, and the manufacturer can achieve a similar sort of outcome (without facing legal ramifications) by choosing the first solution. The third solution is not a good one given that it, in many cases, this would violate the privacy customers are entitled to (or should be entitled to) in a wide variety of cases.
