Unit 2 Discussion Video Transcript Welcome to your Unit 2 Discussion. For this week you will be laying the foundation for a project that you will start working on this week, and continue working on throughout the term, until week 5. The goal here is to take many of the very central topics that you are learning about Algebra in ALEKS and other learning activities, and applying them in a more realworld context. Our goal with this project is that we are going to research a pair of variables that we believe are directly related, and then we are going to test and see if they form a linear function; if they form a straight line on a graph, and have that consistent linear relationship. Keep in mind this is something you are gathering raw data for, so it might not result in a linear equation, and that's ok! The goal is to go through the process. For example: we have an example down here for you. In this example we have looked at different baseball pitchers, and we have looked at their number of strikeouts in regard to their number of wins. So the goal here it would be to say \"Ok, we think that for the number of strikeouts, as that increases, the number of wins would increase.\" So that would be an example of the hypothesis that we are looking at here, and also of course we would want to look for a reliable source for this information, which we cited in a reference down here. So, the steps that you would follow are listed right down here. You'll want to start by stating your topic, defining what your variables are and how they will affect one another, and then set up a chart, an XY table, where you list the data that you have found. And of course you really want to take your time, research this data, make sure that you are getting it from a reliable source. The last thing that you should do this week is of course cite your source. Show us the URL for the site where you found that information, so that we can take a look at the data that you found and where you retrieved it from. Some tips for when you are doing that research! You want to keep in mind that obviously you want the relationship to be one where your variables are fairly clearly related. You should have single numbers, no intervals. Also keep in mind you cannot use words or descriptions for your x or y values; they must be numbers, ie. Quantifiable values. As we move on with this project, you will see that we will use formulas you are seeing in ALEKS in order to do your work here, such as the slope equation to find the slope of a line, or the slopeintercept formula for an equation to find a line, using slope & one of your points (x, y). You can always look ahead to future Units to see what will be expected of you! And of course, if you have any questions, you can ask your Instructor and they will be happy to help you or answer any questions! Finally, keep in mind that the other portion of your grade, in addition to your initial post, is to respond to 2 classmates' posts. This makes up 35 points of your grade. Plus, another 5 points - and we can click on the rubric here to see - is made up of Mechanics. So, capitalizing sentences, using proper grammar, punctuation, and things of that sort. So again, if you have any questions, let you Instructor know and we would be happy to help you. We look forward to seeing your work
