Unit 4 Extra Credit: Problem 4 (1 point) The pvalue and the level of significance are probabilities. The pvalue is the probability of getting information as extreme as what we see in our sample if the null hypothesis were true. The level of significance is the probability of getting a Type | Error that we are willing to accept for the experiment. The p-value method of hypothesis testing compares the probablities. If the p-value is less than or equal to the level of significance, then we reject the null hypothesis. The criticalz method of hypothesis testing compares the zscores related to the probablities instead. The test statistic of the sample is compared to the criticalz, a zscore such that for a 1tailed test the area to the right of it is a, or for a 2tailed test the area to the right of it is %. We reject the null hypothesis when the absolute value of the test statistic is greater than the criticalZ The pvalue method and the criticalz method lead to the same conclusion for a hypothesis test. For example, suppose we want to conduct a 2tail hypothesis test for [4 when 0' is known for a = 0.05, and we got a test statistic z = 2.34. The criticalz would be 1.96, the zscore with a righttail area of 0.025. Because 2.34 is greater than 1.96, we reject the null hypothesis. Use the ztable to fill in the blanks for the following situations: A. A 1tail hypothesis test with a = 0.0233 will have a criticalz of B. A 2tail hypothesis test with a = 0.0358 will have a criticalz of C. A 1tail hypothesis test with a = will have a criticalz of 2.25. D. A 2tail hypothesis test with a = will have a criticalz of 1.91
