Unit 5 Topic
Read the Whitley vs BP, P.L.C. case study found in Chapter 12 of your textbook Walsh, D. J. (2019). Employment law for human resource practice (6th edition). Cengage Learning. readings this week. At issue is the denial of disability benefits. Overview Assignment details are included in this assignment overview and in the Assignment Guide, which is in the Course Room. You are to take the role of the Human Resource Manager at GreenTech Ltd. Your career is off to a great start, and you are now ready to get to work. Each week, you will review, assess, and analyze a topic, event, or case, and based on your findings, you will share a written report with your supervisor, the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO). The instructor for this course is in the role of the CHRO. Your report will summarize the topic, event, or case and will include a recommendation for improving HR practice at your company. Your challenge is to use this case as though it were an event that involved your employer, GreenTech Ltd. As the Human Resource Manager, you are assessing the case, event, or legal principle, and you will share a report with your immediate supervisor, the CHRO. (Even though the cases, events, and legal principles described in the source material name other parties, use them as though GreenTech is the employer -- the company -- involved in the matter.) Your goal is to understand the legal principle, use learning from the events that occurred, and apply that learning to the practice of HR by making specific (not generalized) recommendations to the CHRO. Make sure you read this entire document to fully understand the assignment requirements. Use the Assignment Guide which is a resource in the Course Room. Use the Insights Forum which has additional resources. 1 2 Use the Assignment Guide and the table below, which will tell you what sections are required for this assignment. Make sure you use the sections that are required for this assignment in this Unit. Please know, following this structure is a requirement for your assignment to be accepted. Assignment Structure for Each Unit Part Required Header (centered and bold in your assignment) Units Part 1 Introduction Introduce topic and main points. U1 to U7 Part 1 Law or Legal Principle Identify the law or legal principle involved. This can be done in three or fewer sentences. U1 to U7 Part 1 Case Summary Summarize the case. This can be done in one or two short paragraphs. U1 to U7 Part 1 Explain Key Facts Highlight key facts that are related to the practice of HR. Identify a few (3 to 5) key facts from the case that are directly and specifically related to the practice of HR. Explain why the key facts you selected are important to the practice of HR. This can be done in one or two paragraphs. U3 to U7 Part 1 That Which Is Obvious List three to five (3 to 5) or more obvious implications or possible recommendations. These help you clear distractions so you can focus on Part 2. U1 to U7 Part 2 Direct Impact on HR List at least five (5) ways this case or legal principle might directly impact the practice of HR. U3 to U7 Part 2 Most Important Implication for HR Using the items that directly impact HR you identified, determine which is the most important right now for the practice of HR. U2 to U7 Part 2 Specific HR Recommendation Make a specific (SMART) recommendation to the CHRO that is directly related to the practice of HR and addresses avoidance of the situation or event in the U1 to U7 Part Required Header (centered and bold in your assignment) future. The recommendation must be actionable, must be explained, and must be supported with evidence from your readings and research. Units Part 2 Secondary Recommendations This is completely optional. If there are additional recommendations you are motivated to share, include them in a separate section. Part 2 Conclusion Optional for all Units U1 to U7 The purpose of your conclusion is to summarise the main points of your assignment. References References Include properly formatted references that are connected to appropriate and properly formatted in-text citations. U1 to U7 Your specific recommendation must do more than tell us what we already know. The items noted below are the types of things you will identify for the section of your report titled That Which Is Obvious. Avoid making recommendations such as the following: Know there is an applicable law Understand the law Follow the law Be trained in the law Have policies and procedures that adhere to the law Not violate the law While these are all important, we did not learn them from the current case. We knew them before the case took place. Of course, you need to know the items listed above in order to make appropriate, specific, and actionable recommendations. (Keep in mind generic statements, broad ideas, unsupported personal opinions, merely repeating what is in this assignment description, and repeating versions of what we knew before the case do not satisfy the assignment requirements.) This assignment is your opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the law or legal principles based on the case or event reviewed as it relates to the practice of HR. This assignment is also your opportunity to demonstrate your critical thinking and analytical skills by using the case or event as a catalyst to explore how HR practices can be improved. 3 The goal of this assignment is not to do as much writing as possible but to do as much focused and thoughtful idea-sharing as possible. Make sure you use evidence and support, as appropriate, for each section of your response. Requirements Use the Assignment Guide resource, which is in the Course Room. Submit your assignment as a business report for the CHRO in the text box of the designated Assignment Forum. Strict is not required for assignment forum submissions. However, all sources must be accounted for using citations and references. Support your report with appropriate resources (text, readings, research, etc.) using citations and references. Valid references other than the textbook require the following: a) must be a valid source (for example, random websites and sources like Wikipedia, LinkedIn, or Indeed are not valid sources); b) must include a link to the source (without a link, the entry will not count as a valid source); and, c) there must be both an in-text citation and an entry in the reference list to count as a valid source. Links and entries listed at the end of the assignment for which there is no evidence of use do not count as valid sources. Use the required sections for your report. The required sections differ in each Unit. Use the Assignment Structure shared above, which is also included in the detailed Assignment Guide. Review at least one classmate's posting after posting your submission to the assignment forum. Use the RISE model of peer feedback to give feedback helpful when finalizing the final project later in the semester.
