Unshielded twisted pair cabling, or UTP cabling, is the most common type of network cable in use today. A layer of insulating plastic separates each pair of twisted copper wires in UTP cables. The category of a given UTP cable is determined by the maximum data transmission rate that the cable can support. UTP cable categories vary from CAT3 to CAT6, with each type delivering a speed and performance gain over the one before (Scarpati, 2019). CAT3 UTP cables are the most ancient cable type and are rarely utilized in modern networks. They are typically used for phone lines and can maintain a data throughput of up to 10 Mbps across a distance of up to 100 meters. CAT4 UTP cables are employed in token ring networks because they can support data rates of up to 16 Mbps across lengths of up to 100 meters. CAT5 UTP cables, which have two twisted pairs, are used in Ethernet-based local area networks (LANs). They can support data rates of up to 100 Mbps over distances of up to 100 meters.

CAT5e Untwisted Twisted Pair (UTP) cables have four twisted pairs and are utilized in Ethernet-based LANs. They can transmit data at a rate of one gigabit per second across a distance of up to 100 meters. CAT6 UTP connections are commonly used in Ethernet-based LANs and data center networks (Scarpati, 2019). They are made up of four tightly coiled twisted pairs that can transfer data at 1 Gbps over 100 meters and 10 Gbps over 50 meters. The various UTP cables accomplish quicker data transfer speeds by using pairs of copper wires tightly coiled and twisted together, which helps prevent signal interference. Higher-quality UTP cables are made of better materials suited to reducing signal interference and crosstalk. It is because higher classes correspond to higher-quality materials. Furthermore, the higher-quality materials improve signal transmission and reduce signal attenuation, all of which contribute to the faster speed of the UTP cable.
