Use Any assumptions.Your objective is to design a Green Process to use methylcyclohexane as a carrier to produce hydrogen at a site that requires significant backup to solar and wind and determine the cost for that hydrogen with an overall return on investment (ROI) of 10%. The scope includes (see diagram below)

  • Design the process for producing methylcyclohexane by hydrogenating toluene. . Develop design and equipment/utilities necessary to do this. Choose a process to manufacture hydrogen and determine the cost (use literature values). Toluene is supplied at 99.9% purity. The reactor design needs to address the management of the exothermic reaction and catalyst deactivation. The separation scheme must produce at least 99.9% purity MCH.
  • Develop the design for producing hydrogen from MCH by dehydrogenation to form toluene and hydrogen at the remote site. The reactor design must be able to handle the endothermic reaction and the catalyst deactivation. The separation scheme has to be sufficient to produce the quality of the toluene that can be recycled back to the base plant. The hydrogen has to be purified so that GHG are minimized during the combustion.
  • There are several ways to produce the hydrogen feed for the MCH reaction. Use
    1. Electrolysis of water ( Green hydrogen)
