Use the following two terms to answer the questions...

White Supremacy: A belief that white people constitute a superior race and should therefore dominate society; typically to the exclusion or detriment of other racial and ethnic groups, in particular black individuals.

Color Blindness: The racial ideology that posits the best way to end discrimination is by treating individuals as equally as possible, without regard to race, culture, or ethnicity.

1. Pick two of these ideologies and define them conceptually. In doing so, focus on what is meant by the term, and why it is an ideology. If you disagree with the framing of your chosen terms as "ideologies" you may feel free to include a critique.
2. Discuss the relevance of these two ideologies for our understanding of race and punishment. Specifically, how are these two ideologies reflected in the practices and logic of the U.S. carceral state? How do they shape everyday material outcomes for people in contact with the criminal justice system? If you offered a critique in part a), you may alternatively discuss why you think your chosen ideology/ideologies do not shape carceral practices, logic, and material outcomes.
3. Imagine that you are going to meet and converse with scholars who have written about the role of the ideologies you selected in parts a) and b) (e.g., capitalism, racial capitalism, justice through punitiveness/punishment, white supremacy and/or color blindness, etc.). They are interested in hearing your critiques of their frameworks. Specifically, they want to know your thoughts on the limitations of these frameworks in explaining how race and punishment operate in the U.S. carceral state. Think about the two ideologies you discussed in parts a) and b). What would you tell them? What limitations would you point out?
