Purpose
To use what you have learned in this unit regarding proper measurement and calculation techniques in order to discover which of three factors affect the period of a pendulum. (Be sure to research what the period of a pendulum is and how to measure it.)
Background
A pendulum is simply a weight that is able to swing from a fixed point. You can easily make a pendulum out of a piece of string and any weight. For the purposes of this lab you should use a weight that can easily attach and that you have multiple of so that you can perform multiple trials.
The three factors that you are tasked into examining in this lab are:
- The amount of weight at the end of the pendulum.
- The length of the pendulum.
- The amount you pull the pendulum back from the resting position.
You are expected to do multiple trials of each value so that you will have a better chance of eliminating sources of error. All measurements will be graded based on being made accurately on being recorded to the proper precision (all the way to the uncertain digit). All calculated values will be expected to have the proper number of significant digits.
Project Expectations
Your final project should have the following clearly labeled sections.
Introduction:
- Three different hypotheses, one for each factor, each given a justification.
- A short description of each experiment including materials needed, what factor is being changed, what is being measured and what is being kept constant.
Data and Analysis
- All data clearly labeled, including averages for multiple trials.
- Graphs showing the relationship of the period vs. the factors being tested. Here are some Graphing Tips.
Conclusion and Evaluation
- Conclusion statement for each factor, along with evidence from the lab that supports the conclusion.
- An evaluation of the lab process. Must list at least one technique that is highly recommended for future pendulum studies, and one technique that must be improved on for the future. Student addresses precision and accuracy of measurements, how they are limited, and how they could be improved.
