Useful information:

  • The tasks in Business, Governance, and Society are very much connected to the growth as a professional manager and as a leader, but also as a responsible citizen because you should not see the two spheres of life as separate.
  • This task asks you to construct personal development plan. You are very unlikely to become a responsible manager or leader by accident. It takes focused work to become an ethically responsible person and a plan gives you focus. Specifically, task 1 requires you to be able to demonstrate the ability to identify the core ethical values and how to align the values with wise behaviours in business contexts.
  • Research tells us that identifying the core values is not as easy as you might think. In fact, my experience is that most people find it challenging to name more than 2 or 3 core values. Because of this, you will spend some focused time in workshops exploring what values are, what values you think are important to how you go about the life, and what values are implied in how you act in everyday situations. Having done all this preliminary work, you will have a much clearer idea of what the core values are, and what they should be, and if there is a gap between what they are and what they should be.
  • Keep in mind that personal values change as you go through life and therefore what you end up focusing on this semester is not the end of the values story, it's only the beginning. You will and should expect to continue to change and update the values.
  • More specifically, this task asks you to identify the core values and analyse how the values align with wise behaviours. Values and wisdom are closely linked and so we will also consider what wisdom is in workshops.
  • To get the most out of this task, apply critical thinking skills to develop an action plan that will align the values with professional behaviours that support and are consistent with those values. There is no point in claiming to have sound values and then doing things that are contrary to the espoused values.
  • Cultivating behaviours that are consistent with the values is something that few managers and leaders do, but those that do are much better prepared for a contemporary global business, market, and legal environment. I want it to be one of those well-prepared leaders.
  • The plan needs to be systematic, informed by appropriate research, the UN frameworks on human rights and sustainability, and on thoughtful personal reflection.
