Using Lean to Improve My Processes Many who learn the continuous improvement concepts of Lean state that they are built on common sense. Furthermore, we begin to see processes that we follow every day both consciously and subconsciously that become routine and we never ask the question "how might I improve this?" or "why do I do it this way and is there a better way to do it?" The body of knowledge of JIT/Lean is significant, with many simple ideas that can be applied anywhere to make improvements. Kaizen is based on the concept that significant improvement is best achieved incrementally over time through the accumulation of many small improvements. True Kaizen results in the thinking paradigm shift of always seeking to improve rather than fixing something only after a problem occurs. Based on the JIT/Lean materials, discussions in class, and after listening to the Canvas Lean Module lecturettes and watching the Kaizen Toast video, choose any process that you do frequently and do the following: 1. Briefly explain the process related to your job you are examining and could be improved. 2. List the detailed steps in the process 3. Identify which are not adding value and can be removed 4. Make a recommendation Lean operating techniques & problem solving tools you would apply along with specific recommendations for an improved process 5. Be sure to identify specific examples of the non-value added that could be removed.
