JL Visiting Scholar in Peru Ancient sites in Peru have long been of interest for scholars from many elds, including archeologists, anthropologists. and biologists from around the world. Because of increased mining activity in Peru, there are also mining industries, global and local, that have interests in some of the remote areas. Many of these areas are protected lands controlled by the local populations. Recently there have been increased tensions in a region that has traditionally belonged to the Quechua peoples. In addition to the archeological sites found there and only partially excavated, it is believed that signicant mineral deposits lie deep in the tribal lands. You are a Peruvian professor originally from this region who has just been appointed as the dean of the school of archeology and antiquities in Lima. You have been leading an archeological dig in the disputed area for the past ve years and are well-connected with the local constituencies. Things have gone well so far, but with the recent added tensions, you know that great care must continue to be taken. You invited a colleague, Arend de Woert, a well- respected archeologist from the University of Utrecht and expert in South American antiquities, to join the team and head the local work as you are needed at the university in Lima. Dr. de Whas worked extensively on archeological digs around the world and has a reputation for respecting the land and artifacts of sacred places as well as walking well with diverse teams. Tensions have been rising lately and you know that it is critical for Dr. de Woert to make a good rst impression with all the key stakeholders including local community members, mining company representatives, and government officials concerned with the preservation of local antiquities as well as economic development. You have therefore arranged a dinner for all parties as part of a local festival to introduce him to everyone and so he can experience the local culture. It is often difcult to gather the range of stakeholders in one place and this is a special occasion. When you invite him, Arend is less than enthusiastic about the invitation, expressing concern about preparing for the rst ofcial joint meeting of the team the next day. He says that while he is honored by the invitation, he feels he should spend his time perfecting his presentation for the meeting tomorrow. He also has been unable to reach his family back home for the past week and needs to speak with them. Your feelings are hurt as you walk away from your meeting with Arend. You are concerned that the project on which you have worked so diligently for the past five years may now be in serious jeopardy. You know that unless de Woert is accepted by the local team, government, and university ofcials, barriers to access and continued funding will be an issue.
