Triathlon Diagnostics, Inc. (TDI) has developed cutting edge training improvement programs for triathletes in the Chicago area. The company is a non-profit spin-off of Swedish Covenant Hospital, made up of doctors who are all athletes and who have an interest in physical training research. They have done research on new training methodologies and they use their research to help people run the Chicago Triathlon, which takes place each October. Based on their research TDI has developed 3 training "packages", one for each event in the triathlon: the run, the bike and the swim. Each package contains training videos, a handheld device that monitors vital signs and a training book for that event. Federal grant money and application fees pay for the assembly of the three kinds of training packages, which are shipped to TDI and kept in inventory. TDI's services have become exceptionally popular, but resources are limited. This is why the application process was instituted. TDI evaluates applications looking for the triathletes who TDI believes can most be helped with their services. Only some of the applicants are accepted. This is how their business operates: In May of each year, applications are received by the applications clerk, along with a nonrefundable $100 application fee. Each application is reviewed by a doctor who approves or rejects it. Data about the applicant and the application is captured in the database regardless of whether the application is accepted or rejected. An applicant may apply multiple times until accepted, but if accepted, the applicant may only go through the TDI training process once. The TDI training process: Approved applicants come in for a training interview. At the training interview a doctor talks to the applicant, reviews the application information, and determines which event in the triathlon the applicant needs help with, the run, the bike or the swim. An applicant may need help with one, two or all three of the events, but each applicant needs help with at least one event - their application would not have been chosen if they did not have a need in some area. As the applicant leaves the interview, he/she receives one, two or three training packages from the doctor. An applicant only has one training interview. In November, each triathlete comes in for a post-triathlon interview with a TDI doctor. They first review the training interview data, and then they discuss the results of the training. At the end of the interview the applicant returns the training package(s), which are reused the next year. An applicant only has one post-triathlon interview. TDI wants to keep a database of information about applicants, applications, TDI staff involved, training interviews, post-triathlon interviews, training packages in inventory. They want to know which applicants were approved or rejected, which applicants received which training packages, content of the training and post-triathlon interviews, and what the inventory levels are for each training package.
