- During the daytime hours point your spectrometer towards the sky, but not directly towards the sun as it could damage your eye. It does not matter if it is a cloudy day, you will observe the same spectrum on both sunny and cloudy days. Take a photo of you doing this.
- With all other sources of light removed, point your spectrometer at a fluorescent light. Fluorescent lights are the long tube lights used mainly in office buildings. Alternatively, if you have a compact fluorescent light bulb this will work too. Take a photo of you doing this.
- With all other sources of light removed, point your spectrometer at an incandescent light. Incandescent lights are the traditional light bulbs in household lamps. Take a photo of you doing this.
- With all other sources of light removed (night time if possible), point your spectrometer at an automobile headlight. Take a photo of you doing this.
- With all other sources of light removed, point your spectrometer at a neon light. You may need to go to a store with a lit "open" light or something similar.
- With all other sources of light removed, point your spectrometer at a street light.
- Fill in the table below with your results. Include a photo of this table in your lab submission.

- Point your spectrometer towards the sky and qualitatively determine the wavelength of the brightest light.
- Point your spectrometer towards an incandescent light and qualitatively determine the wavelength of the brightest light.
- Point your spectrometer towards an electric stove top that's glowing red and qualitatively determine the wavelength of the brightest light. (You can use a blue flame if you have a gas stove.)
- Record the wavelength read with the spectrometer in the table below. If you can, take a photo of the inside of the spectrometer with the reading on the scale.
