Vectors and Adding Vectors
Objectives:
- Study vectors and learn about representing vectors.
- Learn how to apply the rules for vector addition both graphically and analytically.
Introduction:
Physics deals with quantities that have both size (or magnitude) and direction. A vector is a mathematical object with size and direction.A vector quantity is a quantity that can be represented by a vector. Examples would be displacement, velocity, and acceleration.
Vectors have their own rules for manipulation.The vector sum, or resultant, is the result of performing vector addition. The rules for how to do this are explored in this lab.
Part I. Graphical Method
To find the resultant vector S = A + B, put the tail of vector B on the tip of vector A, then the resultant vector R is the vector that starts from the tail of A to the tip of B as shown:
