Vermont has a unique legal environment. One of the more unique featuresare the "side judges." The side judges sit to the side of the law judge and traditionally were able to rule on issues of law. They are elected to the position and do not have to be admitted to the Bar, or to have a law degree. Over the years the role of the side judges has lessened. For example, they no longer sit on criminal cases. However, they do sit on family law cases and can preside over small claim cases. They cannot rule on issues of law.

My question: What do you think of the position? Why was it put into place?Should it continue or is it outdated?
