Rolled steel I sections of 254 x 102 x 28kg or 127 x 76 x 13kg are suggested and data on the sections is found in table U8/LO1/T1. Note that the Code of Practice does not allow a slenderness ratio in excess of 180. TASK 2A Decide on a suitable position to locate the support column, calculate the slenderness ratio and the compressive stress in each suggested section and justify whether either is suitable to use.
