The purpose of this assignment is for you to observe a child and to interpret your observations from a developmental point of view. The experience of observing a child will help solidify understanding of physical, emotional, social, cognitive and language development and how these different areas are interrelated.
Part 1: Watch/Observe assigned Video's of Seb (their are 6 video clips on Seb) and take notes (see following pages for 'how tos') - This is the Running Record. Although the videos are titled Physical, Language, Cognitive, Social/Emotional use entries from any video for any part of the observation.

Use the Running Record format to observation notes as Part 1 - Running Record. While watching these videos, your detailed running record notes will help you do Part 2 - the analysis for your report.

Part 2: Analyze and write the different developmental skills that you have observed
After your video observation, you will analyze your running record notes to report on the child's physical, cognitive, language, and social-emotional development in a written report. . Compare the child's development to milestones that are typically achieved in the preschool years. It is important to remember that individual differences exist when it comes to the age at which children meet these milestones. Milestones should not be seen as a rigid checklist to judge children's development, but rather as guides for when to expect certain skills or behaviors to emerge in young children. Think of these milestones as guidelines to help you understand and identify typical patterns of growth and development in children. Although developmental milestones develop in a predictable sequence, always keep in mind that each child is unique.
Each paragraph should include an observation - from your running record, a milestone - from the milestone charts and an evaluation - your opinion, comparing the observation and the milestone. Use observation (running record) notes, information from the Developmental Milestones resources provided in this module. Feel free to use additional resources as well.
