VIGNETTE: CASE OF ALLY Ally is a single, 37-year-old and identifies as white and transgender (pronouns she/her). She received her law degree and worked as a social justice attorney for five years. Ally reported feeling burnout and vicarious trauma, which prompted her to start therapy at a community counseling center (sliding scale). Ally is considering leaving her job to start her own business and reports feeling "stuck" and a sense of hopelessness/loneliness. Ally was diagnosed with a binge eating disorder when she was 14 and struggles with finding healthy coping mechanisms during times of stress. She reports being an "alpha," a "perfectionist," and a "high-achiever," which has brought her accolades throughout her educational and career journey. However, Ally struggles with intimate relationships, both in her personal and professional life. While excited about the possibility of being an entrepreneur, she is fearful of losing a consistent income and medical benefits, which she relied on when going through her medical transition. She continues to attend monthly group counseling sessions for disordered eating (which is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and plays an inspirational role to her group members. She is inspired to create a coaching business for legal professionals, particularly those from historically underrepresented communities. Although Ally believes her skills can be utilized in new ways, she expresses concerns about the barriers she might face as a transgender woman starting a new business and the financial resources required to do so.
