• Violet was a student in the Social Work and Human Services Program at Palomar. She enrolled in school as a single mother with three children, ages 3, 12, and 15. Violet had served in the military for three years and was receiving funding from the Armed Services to attend school. Violet reported feelings of frustration because she has sought help before and had social service workers tell her "you get everything for free from the military, why are you here?" She seemed hesitant and anxious to even see help again. She still struggles to provide for herself and her family while she was in school. She reported not receiving consistent child support. Violet has not been able to get into her doctor for over 9 months and has possible pressing health issues due to her previous work in the military. Her eldest daughter needed special medical services since she is a diabetic, has debilitating allergies and a developmental delay. Violet reports her daughter has been hospitalized four times last year when she experienced breathing difficulties. Her 12-year-old son had learning difficulties and psychological and emotional problems. The school officials and the school psychologist recently recommend a special school for her son for at least six months. Child care is required for her 3-year-old while she is in school and she is able to utilize the Child Development Center on campus.
